The Story
The story is about a monarch with a very specific sense of priorities. His main castle is melting in the flames, and his subjects are fleeing in terror. The harvests are reduced to ashes, and death stalks his lands. a cup of Earl Grey in hand—perhaps a tad too hot for his liking…
A true lesson in mindfulness.
Composition, Palette, and Intent
I used a limited color palette (amber and golden yellows) contrasted against deep, earthy browns and blacks. This creates a visual tension between the warm, “royal” glow of the king’s environment and the scorched, shadowy reality of his burning kingdom.
The composition is pyramidal, establishing the monarch’s dominance. He appears utterly detached, his profile radiating a great lack of interest. He is just enjoying the sunlight and his cup of tea. My goal was to divert the viewer’s eye from the verticality of the stylized flames at the center (among other elements).
Finally, I chose to represent the kingdom in an abstract, pictographic style rather than drawing realistic landscapes. This reinforces the sense of emotional distance, transforming a tragedy into a mere administrative detail.
Potential Uses
This visual would be ideal for the cover of a satirical fantasy game or an editorial illustration about politics. It would also work perfectly as a “catastrophe” event card in a management-themed board game.
