For this illustration, I decided to depict a modern scene that reflects today’s digital dependency. I wanted to capture a moment of solitude, despite the appearance of being physically close. I used a minimalist, vector graphic style (no surprises there! 😅) to keep the composition simple and emphasize the main message.
Technical Intentions
I wanted the illustration to be clean and straightforward, so I used simple shapes and flat colors. I chose a side profile view for the three characters to visually isolate them and emphasize their mutual disengagement. The dark gray background creates a sober and somewhat austere atmosphere, which contrasts with the warm tones of the characters’ hair and skin, highlighting their emotional isolation.
The absence of complex shadows or unnecessary details was intentional. This gives the image a flat and uniform appearance, typical of modern vector illustrations. By removing distractions, I aimed to focus attention on the characters’ body language and posture, all of whom are absorbed in their screens.
Key Aspects of the Composition
- Composition: I chose a centered and symmetrical composition to emphasize the uniformity of their actions and reinforce the theme of shared solitude. The two men on the sides and the woman in the center create a visual balance that draws the viewer’s eye toward the middle of the image.
- Color Palette: The limited palette of neutral and warm tones is used to highlight the contrast between the coldness of digital isolation and the potential warmth of human interaction. The bright colors of the hair contrast with the dark background, accentuating the characters without too many distracting elements.
- Text and Typography: The text “SO FAR, SO GOOD” is subtly placed at the top of the image to capture attention while complementing the visual message. The simple, sans-serif typography enhances the modern and minimalist aesthetic of the image.
