For this illustration, I wanted to play with the theme of power in a humorous and sarcastic way. I should note that this is fan art inspired by the game Crusader Kings III.

Humorous illustration of a small king on a golden pedestal, wearing a crown resembling donkey ears—a symbol of foolishness in France. In the background, a woman with a knife and a hooded man with a snake plot in the shadows, adding elements of intrigue and betrayal

The king, standing on a golden pedestal, tries to compensate for his small stature by appearing taller and more imposing than the other characters around him. The pedestal symbolizes his desperate attempt to seem important, even though it makes him look somewhat ridiculous. His crown, which is also there to make him appear more imposing than the others, resembles donkey ears—a symbol of foolishness in France, where I come from—adding a satirical touch.

Technical Intentions

I used a minimalist and vector graphic style to create an image that remains light and accessible, with a slightly caricatured feel. The shapes are simple, with clear lines and flat colors. The king, positioned centrally on his pedestal, is highlighted to draw all attention to him, a nod to his need to be noticed. The sword suspended above him adds a theatrical element of drama, illustrating that despite his efforts to appear grand, he remains vulnerable and even a bit comical.

Characters in the Background

The characters in the background add another layer of irony to the scene. On the left, a woman in dark attire holds a long knife, casting a watchful eye on the king. Her expression and posture suggest she’s ready to strike at any moment, hinting at a plot or betrayal. On the right, a hooded man holds a snake, a symbol of deceit and danger. He watches with a conspiratorial air, reinforcing the idea that secret, potentially hostile forces surround the king.

These characters appear to be scheming in the shadows, adding mystery and a sense of threat to the image. They stand in stark contrast to the king, who proudly takes center stage, seemingly unaware of the dangers around him.

Key Aspects of the Composition

  • Composition: The king is placed at the center on a pedestal, with the two characters in the background who, though less prominent, draw attention with their menacing posture and conspiratorial roles. Their placement frames the king and creates narrative tension.
  • Color Palette: Golden tones for the king and his pedestal suggest false grandeur, contrasting with the dark, mysterious colors of the background characters, which enhance the sense of conspiracy and threat.
  • Lighting: The lighting focuses on the king to accentuate his desire to appear larger and more important than he is, while the other characters remain in shadow, reinforcing their roles as silent conspirators.
